John R. Birchman, DSCE, CFOT
Digital Signage Certified Expert
Certified Fiber Optic Technician
I am a freelance Digital Signage, Audience Response, Fiber Optic, AV, lighting, and stage technician in the Orlando / Central Florida area providing skills and support to many shows, productions, exhibits, and conventions in the area, including at the Orange County Convention Center (OCCC).
I started out in entertainment production in 1980 working for community theatre productions in my hometown of Angola, Indiana. This expanded into doing lighting, audio, and technical direction for many productions in the northeast Indiana region.
In 1989 I went to work for Walt Disney World Entertainment as a technician, helping to open the Disney MGM Studios, as well as working on Epcot’s IllumiNations, and various other Epcot venues for almost 10 years.
In 1998 I left Disney to help open the new Islands of Adventure theme park for Universal, as a Parkwide Systems Technician.
Then in 1999 I went to work full time for Lighting Systems Design, Inc. (LSDI), as Technical Director as well as helping with technical aspects and product development.
In the fall of 2005 I decided to start work as a freelance technician, opening myself up to other opportunities. I have worked shows and events from small meeting rooms up to large arena and stadium shows, and work freelance for many different companies based on availability.
In my spare time, I enjoy model railroading, music, and technology.
